Rijak Kaur Sarla (Category-Poem)(So What | Rising Star Award)

The day I was born,
The nurse greeted my father with a smile, ” Congratulations sir, you are blessed with two pretty girls!”,
The girls had pink, rosy cheeks and blonde hair (when she grew up) with princess curls.

Though my parents accepted me,
My sister did not,
Though she pretended in front of my parents,
I know a spiteful glance at me she always shot.

Now I have grown up fighting these prejudices,
Bravely conquering the society’s abyss,
Today I am known because of my passion,
My love for art has assisted me in overcoming the repression.

I draw with the belief that the world is like paradise,
And as what I feel with my white cane,
So what if everything is black for me,
I can express it and surely not everything has gone in vain!
