VEERANGINI OF 1857
Loud war cries reverberated
Ear splitting noise of gunfire filled the air
Acrid smell of gunpowder was overpowering
Sickening sound of necks breaking in hand-to-hand combat
Could be heard as bodies mounted
Within the premises of Palace of Sikandarbag
Along the southern banks of the Gomti
The defence was strong
The offence brutal
Thousands lay dead
Invisible and unnoticed
Camouflaged perfectly within the ‘Peepal’ tree
Piercing eyes filled with rage
Picked their target
Followed by bullets on the chosen track
Destroying the enemy
With deadly precision
An officer noticed the steep downward trajectory among the dead
And directed unrelenting fire towards the massive tree
Dislodging and killing the deadly sniper Warrior
Dressed in men’s clothing, her pouch full of ammunition
The Veerangini had found her mark destroying many an enemy
Now stands there her statue carrying a rifle with the inscription
Uda Devi Pasi, a heroine of the Mutiny of 1857
