Dr Shweta Prakash Kukreja (Category-Short Story) (Power of Music| Certificate of Excellence)

Sad and dejected she sat on the parapet.Open ,undone hair ,smudged kohl, eyes wet with tears. She lost all hopes and every breath she was taking in felt like a burden. She always sat here holding her phone talking to him. It’s been ten months when he left her all alone in the clutches of gloom and sorrow.
“Enough is enough.. This pain is eating me within.I’m not able to fight.Yes.. I’m a coward, I’m weak ….I lost all hopes.I can’t go ahead with this.I will end this pain….end this agony.”she got up and extended her left foot ahead.
At that moment a music striked her ears. The music was soothing and relieving. She stopped and sat again with her eyes closed. She felt the soft music touching her soul. She smiled and then looked for the source from where the sound came.As it grew dark she got up and went back to her room.
Next day as she came on the terrace she heard the same music with a different tune. She smiled as she forgot her pain. This became an everyday routine for her.Sometimes she danced on the tunes, laughing loudly. This continued for a month and now her eyes kept searching for the source of music.
One day she noticed someone cleaning his guitar sitting at the balcony. Her heartbeat grew faster and cheeks reddened.”Why am I reacting like this? Why am I so happy?”she questioned herself. In the evening she got ready in a beautiful red dress and knocked the same door where she saw that guy.Her heart knew that he was the one.
As the door opened she saw a simple, spectacled man with an innocent face.
“Finally..after such a long time.”he smiled.
“You don’t know what your music has done to me.”she said shyly.
“I know everything from the beginning.Since the day you sat on the window crying. The day when you tried to jump from the parapet. The day you took a step towards life. The day you danced on my tunes.”
“Omg…you have been watching me  throughout.”she was shocked.
“Yes..and that’s why I played my music whenever I saw you in crisis.I know music has power to bring someone out of death well.I played with my heart and see it got connected with your soul.”he explained.
“Yes you’re right.Your music synchronised  with my heart. The power of music brought me back to life…helped me find my true soulmate.”She came forward to hold him but he stepped back.
“No… Don’t step ahead. It was my music that helped you.I just played it.Music saved you not me.We can’t go ahead together.Don’t even think of it.”he turned around.
It was a thunderclap for her,”Why?Why can’t we go ahead together?”she cried.
“Because transgenders cannot have a relationship…they cannot fall in love.. They’re only discriminated and stereotyped.”he replied monotonously.
She held his hand and kissed it,”It’s the power of music that saved me and made me realised that true love is above gender, age and class. It’s a bond between two souls.I love you for what you are within and not what gender you belong to.”
Both hugged each other with tears flowing endlessly.
