Book Review – 7 Secrets of Vishnu by Devdutt Patnaik

I have heard a lot of stories on gods like Shiva, Krishna, Vishnu, Ganesh, Lakshmi, Durga and many more goddesses from my grandmother, mother and still hear it from my mom in law too. I have travelled to many known temples in South of India and one of the places, Srirangam in Trichy, Tamilnadu surprised me the most. It’s the largest temple just after Angkor Vat. Lord Vishnu rests here in a lying posture with Lakshmi sitting in his chest. It is after this visit that I wanted to read about lord Vishnu and hence borrowed this book from my friend.

The book has seven chapters each rendering one secret of Vishnu. They also correspond to seven incarnations of Vishnu namely : Mohini, Matsya, Kurma, Trivikrama, Ram, Krishna and Kalki, though I was always taught about Dashavatars. These avtars are selected to reveal the secret and they work around the theme of the avtars.

Unlike its title the book reveals many more secrets about lord Shiva, Brahma, and many more gods and goddesses and asuras. The writing style lacks continuity and those who are not exposed to hindu religion might find it difficult. But it also compensates by giving itself an illustrious touch. Alternate pages are illustrated with murals, paintings and sculptures with call-out bubbles which further explain the mural or the sculpture. The book cover is very attractive with bright colours and a mural of lord Vishnu.

Not revealing anymore secrets and it’s time to recommend this book to everyone who read about religion and spirituality.
